2010 Bentley Continental Supersports
The 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports may be the most extreme example of sport luxury available today, putting mere BMWs to shame. Bentley has offered several variations of its Continental coupe since its introduction in 2003, but the Supersports model exhibits the purest level of performance. Bentley tweaked the already massive engine for more power, fitted wheels with big carbon ceramic brakes, and shed 243 pounds of weight, most notably by removing the rear seat.
I were actually a little surprised at the manageable size of this car, making it easy to maneuver through parking garages and dense urban streets. Despite its smallish size, the body is a head-turner, with external lighting nicely molded into the body and the signature wire Bentley grille. The glossy black 20-inch wheels added to this car's unique look.
2010 Lincoln MKS
The 2010 Lincoln MKS receives a new engine option following its introduction for the 2009 model year. This premium-large car is available with front- or all-wheel drive and shares some of its basic design with the Ford Taurus. Standard on all MKS models is a 275-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine. Available on AWD MKS models is Ford's new "EcoBoost" 355-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. Both engines use a 6-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Standard is a capless fuel-filler system, which allows owners to fill their fuel tanks without having to remove a gas cap. Also standard is Ford's Sync, which offers voice control for cell phones and MP3 players. Other available features include a voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic updates, front-obstacle detection, a rearview camera, keyless entry and starting, and adaptive cruise control. Newly optional on the 2010 Lincoln MKS is a system designed to provide hands-free parallel parking.
2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid
Mercedes-Benz has managed to leapfrog the competition and become the first automaker to put a next generation lithium-ion battery pack into a production hybrid.
New technology aside, the Mercedes-Benz S400 is also the company’s first hybrid of any type to make it into showrooms. For 2010, the entire S-Class lineup has been given a very minor refresh that includes a new grille, headlight clusters with flavor-of-the-day LED running lights, and new front and rear bumpers. The S400 shares in all of those updates and, aside from a couple of hybridbadges outside and in, the land yacht is indistinguishable from its S-Class brethren, unless you look under the hood. Even then, it's tough to tell the difference.
2009 Jaguar XF
the car seems like the ultimate in automotive tech. A red backlight on the engine start button pulses with a heartbeat cadence. Push it, and panels over the air vents open up while the shift dial rises from the console. That's right, a shift dial. Recognizing that most automatic transmissions are electronically controlled, the XF does away with a big legacy shifter, opting for a big dial that you turn to the different drive modes. The touch-screen interface uses a nicely designed set of menus, reminiscent of the LCARS computer interface from Star Trek.
2010 Lexus RX 450h
The new 2010 RX 450h is full of new technology in both mechanical and computer systems. It is amazing to see how quickly the technology is changing from one model year to the next. And what we see in the more expensive luxuryvehicles today will be standard equipment in lower end vehicles in 4-5 years.
Mechanical improvements for the all-new 2010 Lexus RX450 hybrid ($43,250) include a six-speed sequential transmission, an independent rear suspension, a 10-airbag safety system, and an improved all-wheel-drive system. Interior upgrades include improved seats, integrated satellite radio, automatic high beam control, acoustic glass, and a heads-up display.
2009 BMW 750Li
The latest incarnation of the latter is the all-new 2009 BMW 750Li. Signifying a major update, this 750Li starts a new internal body designation series, going from the previous E66 to F02 for this 2009 model.
As Lexus and Mercedes-Benz do with their flagships, BMW pours all of its technology into the 750Li. Because its competitors haven't been updated in a few years, the 750Li gets to trump them with new tech features such as night vision with pedestrian recognition, dynamic traffic avoidance, lane departure warning, a head-up display, and a navigation system with topographic maps.
The L in the model name indicates a longer wheelbase than the standard model, with about extra 5 inches going to the back seat. Thus, it's a good choice for a chauffer-driven car, made more attractive by a rear-seat entertainment system, rear-seat audio system control, little foot rests, and a refrigerator between the back seats. But although the 750Li is just over 17 feet long, it doesn't look too big.
2009 Aston Martin DB9 Volante
In Aston Martin’s lexicon, four-seat convertibles are known as Volantes, center stacks are called façades, and in the case of the DBS and the 2009 DB9, the key has become an Emotion Control Unit. That last term deserves a chuckle, because even for jaded automotive journalists, it takes more than a pocket-sized stainless-steel-and-glass transmitter to control the emotion elicited on rousing the 12 cylinders that live under the hood of a drop-dead gorgeous DB9 Volante.
Certainly, the DB9 could sell on looks alone, but when a car is this beautiful (and costs $200,000, give or take a shekel), performance expectations are high. And frankly, the DB9’s curb appeal hasn’t quite been matched by its performance up to this point. An automatic coupe we tested a few years ago took 4.8 seconds to reach 60 mph from a stop. That number is quick but not mind-blowingly so—just ask a Dodge Charger SRT8 or a Mercedes-Benz E550. It’s good, then, that Aston Martin blessed the ’09 DB9 with more horsepower, a quicker-shifting automatic, and minor chassis tweaks, all intended to help bring its thrill factor more into balance with its immutable beauty.
2010 Audi S4
The 2010 Audi S4 indeed tosses away its V8 for a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that produces 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque; to save you the effort of looking it up, that's 7 fewer horses than the old 4.2-liter eight-cylinder but 23 more lb-ft of torque. The result is a car that's actually quicker than the one that disappeared two years ago when the A4 sedan upon which it was based was completely redesigned. But this stellar new engine is about more than just the numbers. The immediacy of the S4's throttle response is nothing short of amazing -- save for the moderate supercharger whine under hard acceleration, the blown V6 acts just like a naturally aspirated motor, albeit one with a boatload of low-end torque. Those who questioned Audi's cylinder-reduction strategy will be very pleasantly surprised.
The new S4 not only adds speed, but gets substantially better fuel economy as well. The 2010 S4 achieves a whopping 6 mpg (combined) more than the car it succeeds, including a surprising 27-28 mpg on the freeway. That's also better than the similarly swift BMW 335i, even though the rear-wheel-drive Bimmer weighs less and has a taller top gear. If this is the environmentally friendly future of performance driving, color us excited.
There's a lot more to the 2010 S4 than simply its engine, however, as the entire car is now better positioned to compete against other sport-tuned sedans. Like last year's fully redesigned A4, the S4 boasts fresh styling and electronics interfaces along with myriad mechanical improvements. Exclusive to the S4 is a new seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual for those who want the ease of an automatic but without the performance drop-off and lack of involvement that usually goes along with it. An optional sports rear differential is also new, helping to bring the S4's handling more in line with its RWD-platform rivals.
2010 Lamborghini Reventón Roadster
The Lamborghini Reventon Roadster can be described roughly with the words: fascinating, manacing and uncompromising, needless to say these words are backed by solid numbers. The 6.5 liter twelve-cylinder engine produces 661-horsepower (493 kW), catapulting the Roadster from 0 to 100 Km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 3.4 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 330 KM/h (205 mph).
The open-top Reventon Roadster is going to be limited series, less than 20 ultimate vehicles will hit the streets.
2010 Maybach 57
Usually custom-built to a buyer's specifications, Maybachs are for car buyers who think six-figure Mercedes-Benz S-Classes are for commoners. The Maybach Type 57 is a high-end luxury car designed to compete with the Bentley Arnage and Rolls-Royce Phantom VI.
New for 2010
A new higher-end Zeppelin model is introduced to the Maybach Type 57 and 62, featuring a two-tone paint finish, more opulent interior features and additional power under the hood. Only 100 examples are scheduled to be built worldwide.
According to the manufacturer, Maybach styling balances classic and avant-garde features. The doors, hood and fenders are made of aluminum.
Seventeen body colors are available, and two-tone paint schemes can be specified. The Type 57 is around the size of an Arnage or Phantom. A standard power-closing feature pulls the doors shut from the first detent position; a fully closing version is optional. The optional rear sunroof has integrated solar cells to keep the car cool while parked in the sun.
2009 Cadillac CTS-V
With its phenomenally powerful engine and well-designed suspension, the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V serves up blistering acceleration and very stable handling. The navigation system offers excellently integrated traffic and also shows weather conditions. The Bose stereo delivers great clarity.
2010 Tesla Roadster Sport
The Tesla Roadster is the world's first mass-produced, all-electric, high-performance sports car. While that may sound counter intuitive, test drivers assert that the Roadster lives up to the hype.
The Tesla Roadster provides 100 percent of its available torque all of the time, from 0 to 14,000 rpm, allowing it to accelerate from standstill to 60 mph at break-neck speed. What's more, it can travel up to 220 miles without a recharge, maxes out at 125 mph, and doesn't require a single drop of gas. Sports performance aside, the environmental benefits alone are astounding.
2010 Buick LaCrosse
Redesigned for 2010, the Buick LaCrosse is a large front- or all-wheel-drive sedan that rides on an enhanced version of the Chevrolet Malibu's platform. The LaCrosse blends modern styling and surprisingly accomplished handling with traditional Buick traits like light steering and a cushy ride. There are three trim levels: CX, CXL and CXS. Engine options consist of a base 2.4-liter four-cylinder (182 horsepower), a 3.0-liter V6 (255 hp) and a 3.6-liter V6 (280 hp), all paired with six-speed automatics. The LaCrosse is front-wheel-drive except for the CXL, which can be had with all-wheel drive.
Base LaCrosse models come standard with a power driver seat, full power accessories and a seven-speaker CD/MP3 audio system. Higher trims net such niceties as alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, heated power leather seats, rear parking sensors, a heated steering wheel and an 11-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system with a USB port. There are a number of appealing options as well, including adjustable shock absorbers, xenon headlamps, a head-up display, a hard-drive-based navigation system with a rearview camera and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual headrest displays.
